Do Now Blog: Potential Topics

Do Now is a blog run by KQED, a media organization of the Northern California region focused on television, radio, digital media, education, and community. The Do Now blog poses current issues weekly in a format conducive to audiences commenting and sharing opinions via social media outlets.

Below are a few topics that I may develop into a Do Now blog post:

1. Could art bridge the communication gap between the scientific and public sectors?

2. Native species in demise: Should we use genetic modification to save a species? (Ex. American Chestnut)
- One side: Genetically modification alters a species' integrity and it is no longer the same species
- One side: Genetic modification could provide a species with the ability to survive in an environment already so impacted by humans

3. Does wildlife have a place in densely populated human areas?
- One side: Worry over human-wildlife conflicts (car accidents, animals eating trash)
- One side: Humans are a part of nature and thus normally share habitats with other animals, even in cities

4. Encourage or limit human traffic in wilderness areas?
- One side: Encourage people to visit wildness areas to grow appreciation for it
- One side: Limit human presence in order to keep wilderness areas wild

5. STEAM and the intersection of science and art; is there a place for the "A" in STE(A)M?
- One side: Adding art to the mix would dilute the mission of STEM to integrate sciences and math
- One side: The arts enhances the integration of the STEM disciplines and adds more creativity
